Victor Yushchenko has met with the Russian chess grandmaster and former
world champion Anatoly Karpov, who now
heads the board of trustees of the International Humanitarian NGO “Chornobyl
Aid,” president's press office reported
They spoke about the aftereffects of the Chornobyl blast, the world’s worst nuclear disaster, especially how to renew the exclusion zone, complete the construction of special facilities in Chornobyl and help children affected by the catastrophe.
The President thanked Karpov for his efforts and said he supported his idea to involve the international community in discussing the Chornobyl issue. They discussed the possibility to conduct an international forum involving foreign experts and Chornobyl liquidators in Kyiv next spring.
Yushchenko decorated Karpov with the Order of Merit for helping the Chornobyl victims.
First Deputy Secretariat Chief of Staff Ivan Vasyunyk and Health Minister Yuri Polyachenko attended the meeting.
