Monday Victor Yushchenko met with Iceland’s Foreign Minister Valgerdur Sverrisdottir, who is officially visiting Ukraine, president's press office reported.

They spoke about how to build closer trade and investment ties between the two countries and develop international cooperation. The President thanked Iceland for supporting Ukraine’s bid to join the World Trade Organization.

Yushchenko said Ukraine wanted to create a free trade area with Iceland and the European Association of Free Trade, whose members are Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

“We want to liberalize our relations. It is really important to business,” he said.

The President expressed hopes an enhanced agreement which Ukraine seeks to sign with the European Union would help improve our country’s relations with Europe. Thus he was interested to learn how Iceland develops its dialogue with the European Union.

“We see Ukraine’s integration into the EU and NATO as one of the paramount priorities. Our strategic goal is to become members of these organizations,” he said.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Borys Tarasyuk, who was present at the meeting, informed the Head of State of results of his talks with Ms. Sverrisdottir.

Yushchenko called on Iceland to recognize the 1932-1933 Holodomor as genocide. He also invited his Icelandic colleague, Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, to Ukraine.
