Victor Yushchenko regards this week’s return of Volodymyr Shcherban from the United States to Ukraine as “proscription of a person suspected of serious crimes in his motherland” and thanks the U.S. government for extraditing the ex-governor of Sumy oblast. He believes this case is “purely judicial” and has “no political additives.”

“Those who claim that Ukraine’s law enforcement agencies have other motives deliberately deceive our society,” he said, president's press office reported.

Yushchenko thinks any attempt to present the case as political is irresponsible and unacceptable.

Thus he described a recent parliamentary decision to release Shcherban on bail as an “eloquent but highly questionable gesture.”

“Wanted by Interpol, Shcherban was hiding away from justice overseas,” he said. “So the deputies must have been aware of possible legal and moral consequences of such a move when baling the person suspected of crimes.”

“We are all equal before the law. Today investigators have to substantiate their charges. We are all interested in that: Shcherban, Ukraine’s law enforcement agencies, society, government, parliament and President,” he said.
