Referendum on Ukraine’s accession into NATO will be
held not before 2008, as Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Borys Tarasyuk declared
during his visit to Estonia’s capital.
Before that moment the government must spare no effort to inform Ukrainians about tasks and activities of the Alliance to make citizens’ choice conscious, the minister is convinced.
In his turn, NATO Gen Sec Yaap de Hoop Scheffer reminded that he would like to “give positive signal” to countries-candidatures, including Ukraine, as early as during Riga summit, scheduled for the end of November.
However, NATO candidatures will receive an invitation only after they have met criteria of accession, Scheffer noted.
