The World Trade Organisation gives Ukraine three weeks for adoption of the draft bills related to the Ukraine’s accession into the organisation otherwise, Kyiv will have to continue negotiations next year.

On October 27, the schedule of Ukraine’s accession was discussed in Geneva. The main attention was paid to adoption of the package consisted of 20 documents and the signing of the rest of two protocols with Kyrgyzstan and Taiwan.

According to the WTO experts, Ukraine must urgently pass following draft bills: agrarians’ VAT, milk and meat, support for the agricultural complex, export duties on iron-and-steel and non-ferrous scrap, live cattle and raw stock, cancellation of the age limits on import of autos, veterinary.

If Ukraine manages to adopt the rest documents, the working group will hold an official session and pass the complete report setting Ukraine’s commitments. If Ukraine fails to do it in November, its membership registration will be postponed from the spring-summer to the end of 2007. “In that case we will run risks to get stricter conditions,” stressed Volodymyr Baluta, Ukrainian Representative to the WTO and Trade-Economic Mission Head to Switzerland.

“Most likely, WTO countries-members will hold a meeting aimed at adopting the international trade principles in the end of 2007. If we join the WTO by the spring or summer, we will participate in it on equal terms. If not, we will have, for example, to scale down the state support for the agricultural complex,” concluded Baluta.
