Victor Yushchenko has told reporters in Helsinki he hopes the sub-committee of the Yushchenko-Putin Commission on the Russian Navy in Sevastopol will resolve this issue, president's press office report.

The President said “Ukraine and Russia today have absolutely clear regulations in this area,” among them the bilateral agreement according to which Russia’s navy officers and ships will stay in Sevastopol until 2017.

“As guarantor of the Constitution, I will spare no effort to make sure that Ukraine fulfills its obligations,” he promised.

Mr. Yushchenko, however, added that no foreign military bases can be situated in Ukraine according to its constitution. Thus, he said, it is incumbent on the Head of State to ensure that this norm of the constitution is also observed.

“I am convinced we are finding compromises with Russia in these circumstances,” he said.
