During his visit to Hungary Victor Yushchenko has met with Portuguese President Anibal Cavaco Silva for talks in Budapest, President's press office reported.

The two leaders spoke about Euro-Atlantic and economic issues, especially how to build closer ties between Ukraine and Portugal.

Yushchenko praised the dynamics of cooperation between our countries. He invited Mr. Silva and also Portugal’s Prime Minister Jose Socrates to Ukraine.

The presidents discussed migration issues. The Ukrainian leader commended the Portuguese government for helping immigrants, including those from Ukraine, better adapt to new social conditions. Mr. Silva said 100,000 Ukrainians were now residing in the republic, enjoying good standards of living. He also said Portugal sought closer economic ties with Ukraine.

Yushchenko thanked his colleague for supporting Ukraine’s bid to join the European Union and NATO. He reiterated that this course was one of our country’s foreign priorities, expressing hopes Portugal would promote the fulfillment of key goals in Ukraine’s relations with the EU. Among such goals are talks on readmission and liberalization of visa procedures and also talks to sign a free trade agreement. He also thanked Portugal for being ready to hold a Ukraine-EU summit in Lisbon in the fall of 2007.
