On October 12, Secretariat Chief of Staff Victor Baloha and his deputy, Oleksandr Chalyi, met with Ian Boag, a Head of the Delegation of the European Commission to Ukraine.

They addressed the EU-Ukraine cooperation issue, especially the possibilities and peculiarities of ratification free trade and readmission agreements, liberation of the visa requirements. They also discussed preparations for upcoming summit Ukraine-EU in Finland.

Secretariat Chairman Baloha said “Ukraine’s key priorities” were to conduct talks aimed at signing a package agreement with the EU and also to ensure Ukraine’s WTO accession enabling us to sign a free trade agreement. He also said Victor Yushchenko demanded that the Verkhovna Rada pass all the necessary WTO bills by the end of 2006, the president press office reported.

“This clause is inserted in the National Unity Pact. All the political forces that signed it must adhere to it. This is the first political responsibility test,” he said.

Mr. Boag, in his turn, outlined that “Ukraine’s accession to the WTO by the end of this year would be an extremely positive signal for the activation of cooperation between Ukraine and the EU.”
