The European Court on Human Rights sharply criticised violation of prisoners’ dignity in Ukraine and Bulgaria. Strasburg judges obliged official Sofia and Kyiv to pay compensation to plaintiffs for moral damage.

Having brought suit against Ukraine for humiliation his dignity in a prison and inhuman conditions there, a former Ukrainian prisoner gained a suit in Strasburg Court Deutsche Welle informed.

Having considered a suit on prison’s inhuman conditions brought by a former Ukrainian prisoner, Strasburg Court returned Ukraine guilty. The revision conducted by the judges proved “degrading” condition of Ukrainian jails, Deutsche Welle informed.

The Ukrainian ex-prisoner, 59, complained about poor hygienic state, absence of fresh air and daylight. During eight months, he were sharing 14-metres sq m prison cell with 16 other prisoners. Some of them were TB and HIV-infected, the Court statement says.

Moreover, the conditions of the imprisonment fell short of the European Convention for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. According to the Court decision, the Ukrainian citizen will get ?2,000 of compensation.
