October 10, Victor Yushchenko has met with judges of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine.

The President said Ukraine’s society sought to have impartial and independent courts, the Constitutional Court in particular. Unfortunately, he continued, there have been many attempts in the past year to politicize the Court and impede its work. He insisted that the judicial branch must be politically unbiased, the press office told.

“The Constitutional Court is one of the factors of stabilization in the country,” he said, adding that he was happy “the period of uncertainty has ended.”

President Yushchenko promised to help adequately fund courts in Ukraine, saying they were facing many challenges.

“I am convinced we have the common future, and it is determined by your adequate treatment of the Constitution,” he said, expressing confidence that the judicial system would become stronger every day “as one of the manifestations of stability in all areas of life.”

The President presented certificates to the newly appointed judges and wished them success.

Ivan Dombrovsky, Head of the Constitutional Court, said they were ready to perform their duties, the first session being scheduled for October 12.

“I am sure we will work properly,” he said.

Secretariat Chief of Staff Viktor Baloha was present at the meeting.
