President of Ukraine meets Jean Lemierre (Victor Yushchenko has met with Jean Lemierre, President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development)

Victor Yushchenko has met with Jean Lemierre, President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

They spoke about the development of EBRD programs in Ukraine, Europe’s collective energy security and the implementation of the shelter project in Chornobyl, the president press office informs.

Mr. Lemierre said his bank was going to increase the funding of its projects in Ukraine by 50%, planning to invest in energy efficiency technologies, the restoration of outdated energy facilities, municipal programs and projects to develop Ukraine’s transportation network.

He said “new prospects for cooperation with Ukraine’s private sector are appearing, which should help create more jobs.” The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development is also considering the possibility of carrying out joint projects with the European Investment Bank in Ukraine, he added.

President Yushchenko praised Ukraine’s cooperation with the EBRD. He assured Mr. Lemierre, as guarantor of the Constitution, he would prevent populist moves in economic and financial policies. The President also reiterated our country’s course to join NATO and the EU would not change and outlined his vision of Ukraine and Europe’s joint energy security. He also suggested that the EBRD hold its annual session in Kyiv in 2009.

Secretariat Chief of Staff Viktor Baloha and First Deputy Chief of Staff Arseniy Yatsenyuk attended the meeting.

The President is expected to meet with Mr. Lemierre for the second round of talks on October 6.
