“Do not Sell Yourself!” action aimed at countering traffic in persons was held in Kyiv yesterday. The action awaked people’s and authorities’ interest in this problem. The event may become a traditional for the capital and spread over the whole Ukraine. As it is a well-known fact that small towns and villages with the highest level of youth unemployment and no access to the info related to the human trafficking issues are easy to be victims.
According to Kyiv City Administration info, around 200,000 persons are trafficked annually, 10% out of them are children. “Women are invited abroad for so-called ‘work’ but then they are deprived of passports and sold to brothels. Kids are also got in slavery by different means and ways: sex-industry, adoption… Young men may become cannon-fodder for military conflicts in Latin America, Africa… The human trafficking makes milliards profit,” stressed City Council official Zhuravsky.
The action was held simultaneously in different cities of Ukraine: Kyiv, Odesa, Vinnitsa, Lviv, Luhansk, Kherson and Zhytomyr. Its main target was to consolidate society’s efforts aimed at countering traffic in humans and share information about institutions and organisations dealing with this problem.
