President Yushchenko has inked the Act of Ukraine on Ratification of the Revised Social Charter N137-V approved by the parliament on September 14, 2006.
The Act has ratified the European Revised Social Charter 1996-2006 aimed at assistance in adaptation of the national legislation related to the social sphere to the European norms and standards. The European Social Charter guarantees social and economic human rights. It was adopted in 1961 and revised in 1996. The European Committee of Social Rights (ECSR) is the body responsible for monitoring compliance in the states party to the Charter.
As a reminder, the previous edition of the corresponding Act of July 21, 2006 was vetoed by the President of Ukraine. In his remarks to the draft, President Yushchenko proposed to take into account Ukraine’s financial means in order to ratify the Charter at the extent which would let the country to meet its international obligations. During the revision, the President’s proposals were given proper weigh by the parliament.
