According to the latest press release, official closure of the demonstration project in the frame of the EU-funded project “Flood Risk Assesment and Management in Zakarpastka Oblast, Ukraine” will take place on 28th of September at 15:00 in Kvasovo village, Beregivsky rayon, Zakarpatska Oblast. Memorial sign for those, who suffered from floods and those, who worked on prevention of floods, will be established at the newly constructed dam.

The EU experts decided to implement demonstration project in Kvasovo due to the fact that the village was one of the most flooded settlements in Zakarpatya in November 1998 and March 2001. During floods the village was flooded from the side of Borzhava River due to over-flow of water via dam, water filtration through the dam and flowing of water over the motorway (Lenina St.).

Works of sub-contractors were done according to the contract with the contracting party (consortium), leaded by ARCADIS EUROCONSULT (Netherlands). Sub-contractors, Khust PMK – 77 and Vinogravid PMK– 240, were selected on open tender basis. The execution of flood protection construction lasted from April 1 till September 28, 2006. Total cost of the works amounted to 1 mln of UAH.

Flood protection activities and constructions in Kvasovo village included heightening of right side “village” dike, construction of the dike to avoid flooding of the school area, construction of concrete protection wall, heightening of the bridge via Borzhava river, reconstruction of drainage system of the village, construction of the place for portable pumps and purchase of the pumping stations.

The EU-funded project proved to be a big contribution to the village protection against catastrophic floods.
