Ukraine’s President Viktor Yushchenko favours deepening of the strategic partnership between Ukraine and Russia and development of their bilateral relations based on equality and mutual respect, Cabinet’s press office reported.

The Ukrainian Presidential Secretariat's head Viktor Baloha announced this at a meeting with Russia's Ambassador Viktor Chernomyrdin on Monday.

They discussed bilateral relations, Ukrainian-Russian economic cooperation, the present state of and prospects for trade between the two countries. They also discussed the Ukrainian-Russian Intergovernmental Commission.

Baloha stressed the importance that Ukraine's attaches to the activities of the commission and said that Ukraine considers it an important mechanism for political and economic dialogue.

According to him, Ukraine is insisting on the need to complete all the organizational aspects of the preparation for the first meeting of the commission, which is headed by the presidents of the two countries.

According to him, there are no political or cultural problems between Ukraine and Russia. He said that a problem of trust exists and that this problem needs to be solved.

In his turn, Chernomyrdin stated Russia's interest in dynamic and constructive development of bilateral relations.

They agreed to meet regularly to discuss and solve pressing problems.
