On September 22, 2006 within the framework of the 61st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Ukrainian Minister for Foreign Affairs Borys Tarasyuk met with Iraqi Minister for Foreign Affairs Hoshyar Zebari.
At the beginning of the meeting Minister Tarasyuk greeted his Iraqi counterpart Zebari with formation of Iraq’s constitutionally elected Government and emphasized that Ukraine reiterates its support to the Government of Iraq to work tirelessly to promote national reconciliation and peaceful political process. Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine noted that our state is ready to render to Iraq necessary assistance for stabilization of the security situation, reconstruction of infrastructure and economy of Iraq in the framework Reconciliation Plan prepared by Iraqi Government, the Foreign Ministry press service reports.
During the meeting the sides discussed topical points of bilateral cooperation, in particular – possible ways of intensification of Ukraine – Iraq trade and economic cooperation and wider involvement of Ukrainian companies to the Iraqi reconstruction process. Among other issues the parties discussed how to facilitate deliveries of high-quality equipment of Ukrainian producers to Iraq.
Ministers Tarasyuk and Zebari exchanged their opinions regarding the ways of possible cooperation in energy sphere. The parties agreed that signing of Agreement on cooperation in oil and gas sphere between Ukraine and Iraq would become a significant impetus for further cooperation between our states.
During the negotiations the sides also agreed to hold next round of political consultations between Ministries of foreign affairs of Ukraine and Iraq till the end of this year.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Tarasyuk welcomed intentions of Iraq to open the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in Ukraine in the nearest future and invited his colleague to visit Kyiv on this occasion. The invitation was accepted with gratitude.
