On Spetember 14, the National Commission for Freedom of Speech and the National Television and Radio Council discussed ways to ensure and develop freedom of speech in Ukraine.

Their members unanimously said governmental agencies, mass media and nongovernmental media organizations must build effective cooperation.

NCFS Head Taras Petriv told those present Victor Yushchenko had appreciated their annual report, the president press office informed. He also urged them to more actively propose media bills.

NTRC Head Vitaly Shevchenko outlined some of the problems facing Ukraine’s television and radio. He said it was vital to systematically introduce digital technologies.

The participants agreed to involve media experts and journalists to work out a joint plan in the area of mass media and information.

Then they approved a statement to voice their concern over a recently proposed bill on criminal responsibility for libel, regarding this move as a grave setback which is inconsistent with European standards, and promised to ask the President to veto this law if it was passed by the Verkhovna Rada.
