Victor Yushchenko phoned Russian President Vladimir Putin to offer sympathy over yesterday's crash of a Russian Pulkovo Airlines passenger plane near the village of Sukha Balka in Donetsk region, President's press office reported.

The Head of State assured his colleague Ukraine would assist Russia’s special commission which had been formed in Moscow to investigate into the causes of the tragedy, identify bodies and transport them to their homeland.

He promised the Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office and Emergency Ministry would assist Russia’s Prosecutor General Yuriy Chaika, who is expected to arrive at the scene of the crash soon.

Yushchenko also sent a formal letter to Putin to express condolences to the people of Russia, saying Ukraine would help its neighbor in this tragic situation.
