Victor Yushchenko has offered sympathy to relatives of miners that were killed and injured in an August 13 underground blast in the Sukhodolska-Skidna mine in Lugansk oblast. He urged the local authorities to help the victims and their families.

“I condole with you together with all Ukrainians. I ask you to present my heartfelt condolences to the families of the dead and also wish the injured a fast recovery,” he wrote.

As a reminder, six miners were killed and seven others injured in a coal mine explosion Sunday morning in east Ukraine's Luhansk region, emergency officials said.

171 miners were working underground when the blast occurred. Six people died on the spot while seven others were badly wounded, according to the Emergency Situation Ministry.

Rescuers have immediately evacuated the rest of miners and retrieved the remains of the six dead people.

Ukraine's Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych extended condolences to the families of the victims and required the relevant departments to help them.

The cause of the explosion is being investigated.
