The real effective exchange rate of the hryvnia national currency rose by 0.9% in June but fell by 4.3% in the entire January-June period of 2006, according to data from the Economy Ministry.

According to the ministry, the rise of the hryvnia's real effective exchange rate against the US dollar and the Russia ruble in June lowered the competitiveness of Ukrainian exports by 0.9%.

On the cash market, the hryvnia rose by 0.56% in June and by 1.54% in the January-June period.

For the first time since September 2005, the balance of foreign-currency purchases and sales by the population was positive at US$ 63 million in June (negative at US$ 1.876 billion in the entire January-June period) because of the start of the holiday season.

According to specialists with the Economy Ministry, the hryvnia rose against the euro by 1.06% in June and by 5.58% in the January-June period, in line with the trends on international currency markets.
