In Saturday's radio address to the nation, Victor Yushchenko urged the newly elected Verkhovna Rada to immediately convene the Constitutional Court, complete the formation of a parliamentary coalition and create a new government, the president press office informed.

“On behalf of the people of Ukraine, I want our parliament to fulfill these three tasks,” he said.

Victor Yushchenko asked them “not to embarrass Ukraine worldwide” and immediately convene the constitutional court. He also called on the parliamentarians to form a coalition and then a government: “Our coalition agreement provides a political basis for that.”

“I urge all the political forces that want to hold negotiations about the formation of a coalition to stop this artificial confrontation. Ukraine needs unity and society wants reconciliation. There will be enough things to do for all,” he said, reiterating that he was the supporter of an orange coalition.

Then the Head of State insisted that it was incumbent on the Verkhovna Rada to appoint its speaker.

“The speaker should be appointed as soon as a coalition is formed and the opposition receive their committees. As soon as we choose speaker, the country should have its new government,” he said.

The President said the Verkhovna Rada was solely responsible for fulfilling these tasks.
