Ukraine’s accession to NATO is not aimed at the Russian Federation. Such opinion has been voiced by Germany Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador in Ukraine Dietmar Studemann in his interview to Den (Day) newspaper out on Thursday.

“Theoretically, Russia itself should be interested in stable and transparent relations with Ukraine. It is Russian interests to have its South wing to be stable one. I realise it is very difficult to get rid of stereotypes but we must get used to apprehend a situation when the spheres of influence have already gone,” said Mr. Studemann.

“The private interests will exist until the people and states exist. The task is to balance those interests for purpose to formulate them in proper way. NATO is not an organisation aimed against some country,” stressed German Ambassador.

He emphasises that in the wake of Russia-NATO tightened ties Ukraine’s accession to the Treaty cannot be treated as something that threats Russia.

In response to the question whether or not Russia influences Germany’s policy, Mr. Studemann answered: “Russia does not determine our policy. Germany does it itself. Nevertheless, Russian factor is a fact. It must be addressed not only by Ukraine and NATO but by Russia as well,” concluded German Ambassador Studemann.
