Victor Yushchenko and Ukraine’s Industrial Minister Volodymyr Shandra have opened the first unit of the co-generational power plant at the Zasyadko mine.

Addressing the miners, the President said the newly presented energy concept would helpthe coal industryplay the leading role in the national energy system, the president press office informs.

“I will spare no effort to help and develop the coal industry in Ukraine,” he promised.

He said it was necessary to liberalize coal prices: “We cannot support miners with state-managed prices. This policy leads to crises in the industry.” The Head of State added that our mines should be gradually privatized.

Yushchenko said, unfortunately, the Zasyadko mine was “one of very few examples of how effectively a mine can work and launch energy projects.” He said this project showed that the coal industry “has great prospects.” The President also praised the improved safety rules at the mine.

Then he met with Yukhym Zvyagilsky, mine director, and spoke with the miners.
