Javier Solana, High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, Secretary-General of the Council of the European Union declared that the EU would not propose Ukraine and Georgia its membership yet.

He specified that the process of the EU broadening was limited by a circle of countries, which were determined as future members: Romania and Bulgaria first of all, then Croatia, Turkey and West Balkan states.

“We have decided not to propose membership to other countries for the moment, but to maintain close relations with countries, which border upon the EU in the east,” said Solana in an interview to “Novy izvestia.”

He also expressed the opinion that there should not be any rivalry between Russia and the EU as regards relations with former Soviet countries.

“We are interested in that our neighbours, who are Russia’s neighbours as well, have good relation between each other,” declared Solana.
