On May 18, International Museum Day, Victor Yushchenko sent letters to Prime Minister Yuriy Yekhanurov and Kyiv Mayor Leonid Chernovetsky to request them to create proper conditions for exhibiting and preserving art masterpieces at the National Art Museum.

“The National Art Museum is an integral part of the world’s unique cultural treasury,” he wrote, President's press office reported. Its building, however, was constructed more than one hundred years ago and thereby no longer meets modern standards.

The Head of State asked the premier and the mayor to spare no effort to return the 3 Instytutska Street building to the state and later give it to Ukraine’s Culture Ministry.

The President also signed a decree to decorate artist Anatoly Ihnashchenko with the Yaroslav the Wise Order for his “professionalism and personal contribution to the preservation and popularization of Ukraine’s historical and cultural heritage.”
