The government of Ukraine has executed a presidential order to establish the Institute of National Memory.

Victor Yushchenko believes the decision was quite symbolically made a few days before May 21 when Ukraine traditionally honors the victims of the totalitarian regime, the president press office informs.

The institute is intent to preserve national memory, hold events to honor those who fell prey to genocide famines and retaliations, explore the tragic period of totalitarian repressions in Ukraine and make these facts known.

Ukraine’s Finance Ministry and Economy Ministry will have to find additional budget funds forthe institute.

On May 21, Victor Yushchenko is going to take part in a memorial ceremony to commemorate the victims of the totalitarian regime at Bykivnya. Attoday's media briefing, his press secretary, Iryna Gerashchenko, said the President would then also announce who will head the institute.
