In a Mother’s Day radio address to the nation, Victor Yushchenko has outlined a demographic program.

He said falling birth rates and the rise in mortality made the government immediately implement reforms in five directions.

First, they should profoundly reform the health system: “I demand that the government should make sure all citizens of the country and particularly those residing in rural areas get access to high-quality health care.”

Second, the state should launch programs to give housing loans to young families: “Young people should be able to get cheap loans not only to purchase flats but also repair and equip them or start a business.”

Third, both the government and employers should better control working conditions and improve working safety. Yushchenko said he would encourage employers to gradually reduce the number of jobs with dangerous working conditions.

Fourth, the government should better control the quality of food products and water.

“Healthy lifestyle and nutrition are important prerequisites for good health of families and the nation,” he said.

Fifth, the government should popularize sports: “I urge all Ukrainians to quit smoking and heavy drinking, which will benefit your families and the whole society.”
