Victor and Kateryna Yushchenko have visited Vilnius University to open a Taras Shevchenko auditorium at the faculty of philology, President's press office reported.

In his address, the President said he hoped this “room will not only be used for studies but also for diverse public initiatives associated with Taras Shevchenko’s life and works.” Yushchenko added that the fifteen-year-old Taras had first signed his drawing in Vilnius.

He thanked Professor Benediktas Juodka, Rector of Vilnius University, and Borys Klymchuk, Ukraine’s Ambassador to Lithuania, for opening the auditorium. In his turn, Mr. Juodka said they would introduce a new course called Ukrainian studies in 2007.

The Chief of State visited the oldest hall of the university. He presented a book Ukraine: The Cossack State, which had earlier been awarded the Shevchenko Prize, to the library. Then he visited St. John’s Church, which belongs to the campus, and spoke with Ukrainians living in Lithuania.
