Visiting Chornobyl yesterday, Victor Yushchenko said Ukraine would insist that designers and builders of a new shelter intended to contain the radioactive remains of Unit 4 of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant should accept a few additional conditions.

The most important requirement, he said, is the durability of the structure. The second demand is its limited size, for it should not cover the territory that is insufficiently explored.

The Head of State said the Novarka Consortium (France), which is often mentioned as one of the tender winners, had not yet confirmed its readinessto observe these new rules. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development is now holding consultations with the consortium. Victor Yushchenko said “if Novarka agrees, it can start building the shelter soon; otherwise Ukraine would have to conduct a new tender to implement the project in accordance with the simplified procedure.”
