In Chornobyl, Victor Yushchenko has outlined a plan to renew the disaster zone.He said human and environmental safety was fundamental for the implementation of all projectsin the area, teh president press office reports.

The President said Ukraine should first replace the so-called sarcophagus with a new safe shelter and build depositories for nuclear waste in order to determine future perspectives of the area. He added that these projects were interlinked, claiming that“the shelter can function safely only when there are facilities to store nuclear waste.”

Yushchenko suggested that they create a scientific center to study the problems and aftereffects of the accident. It can later launch programs to improve health care, develop the area, renew its flora and fauna and re-cultivate its soils. He also said it was necessary to simultaneously dismantle the fourth unit of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
