Victor Yushchenko has met with Yaroslav Davydovych, Head of the Central Election Commission. They discussed official results of the March 26 election and both claimed it had been fair, legal and consistent with European standards, the president press office informed.
“I think it’s really important that Ukrainians believe the vote was held fairly. International and post-Soviet observers must be unanimous in their evaluations for the first time in our history,” Mr. Yushchenko said, adding, however, that the election procedure should be improved to never again have overly long ballots and crowds at the polls.
“The proportional representation system has complicated many things,” he opined.
Davydovych, in turns, said members of local election commissions should be better trained. He also described the March 26 election as a “sign of our government’s determination to introduce democratic changes: “Nobody doubts that the election was fair, transparent, and legal.”
