President Victor Yushchenko took part in a ceremony to lay the foundation stone of Kyiv’s student town, the press service informed.

The President said this unmatched twenty-million-hryvnya fifteen-hectare student town would not only have student houses, equipped in accordance with European standards, but also a four-thousand-seat entertainment center, a stadium, a gymnasium, a hospital, a maternity hospital, a rehabilitation center, a library, and a church.

Addressing Ukraine’s students, the Head of State said this project showed that “Ukraine needs them wise, competent and patriotic.”

“We are doing it for the sake of Ukraine,” he added.

Mr. Yushchenko said he was convinced that our students belonged to the generation “that will have to face key challenges of our country.”

“When we try to figure out what key unlocks our successful future, I am sure any nation should have brilliantly educated youth to make progress,” he said and added that this project was not a “present wrapped in this year’s election” but a task the government must fulfill for the sake of our future.

Then the Chief of State said the government wanted to make higher education available to all young people.

“This year we will increase the budget education rate by 25%. In some universities it will exceed 80%. This is how we help more than fifteen thousand new students enter universities,” he said, adding that “this is only a beginning.”

Education Minister Stanislav Nikolayenko, First Deputy Chief of Staff Ivan Vasyunyk, Kyiv Mayor Oleksandr Omelchenko and presidents of Kyiv’s leading universities attended the ceremony.
