Victor Yushchenko took part in a ceremony to award Turin bronze winners, biathlon skier Liliya Yefremova and ice-dancers Olena Grushyna and Ruslan Honcharov, and their coaches for outstanding achievements.

Addressing the athletes, the Head of State said: “Your accomplishment is probably the first contribution to Ukraine’s winter athletic fame.” He added that these victories were “great exploits” because of poor training conditions.

The President said the government must create modern and well-equipped training facilities all around the country and reiterated that a meeting of the National Council for Physical Culture and Sports would soon be conducted to find ways of improving Ukraine’s sports infrastructure.

Following the ceremony, Youth and Sports Minister Yuriy Pavlenko presented a project to reconstruct the National Olympic Stadium and build an ‘Olympic village,’ a vast seventeen-hectare complex with an ice stadium and an athletic gymnasium.

NOC President Serhiy Bubka and First Deputy Chief of Staff Ivan Vasyunyk attended the ceremony.
