Victor Yushchenko met with Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus, who is unofficially visiting Ukraine, President's press office reported.

They discussed political and economic relations between the two countries. The Presidents spoke about Ukraine’s negotiations with the EU to liberalize visa requirements and talks on readmission.  Yushchenko thinks the dialogue needs new initiatives and expressed gratitude to his Lithuanian counterpart for helping Ukraine resolve these issues and supporting our country’s ambition to join the European Union.

In his turn, Mr. Adamkus assured his colleague that “having become a member of international organizations, Lithuania does want to see Ukraine also join these organizations.”

The Lithuanian leader said his country was ready and eager to share its experience with us and added that Ukraine’s EU integration was one of key subjects at many diplomatic meetings.

When discussing regional cooperation, the leaders spoke about preparations for the second meeting of the Community of Democratic Choice in Lithuania.

“I am convinced this forum will be successful, and we will formulate new initiatives to promote democracy in the Baltic-Black Sea-Caspian region,” Yushchenko opined.

He also said Ukraine hoped Lithuania would take part in a GUAM summit this May.

Then the sides considered situation in Trans-dniester and discussed energy issues. They also agreed to reestablish a Ukrainian-Lithuanian presidential commission.
