Victor Yushchenko met with Paula Dobriansky, U.S. Under Secretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs, to discuss Ukrainian-American cooperation, President's press office reported.

The President commented on political situation in Ukraine before the March election and said government would spare no effort to make this vote truly democratic. He expressed gratitude to the U.S. government for what they did to accelerate our bilateral cooperation and was particularly thankful to the Bush administration for recognizing Ukraine as market economy. He opined that this move confirmed strategic friendship between the countries. The Head of State then said he was glad Ukraine and the United States had eventually agreed to sign a protocol on mutual access to markets, which should help our country join the WTO.

On March 6, Ukraine’s Economy Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk and U.S. Trade Representative Rob Portman will sign it in Washington.

U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine John Herbst attended the meeting.
