Russian President Vladimir Putin telephoned Ukraine's President and wished Victor Yushchenko Happy Birthday, presidential press office informed.
 
The Ukrainian President presented heartfelt condolences to his counterpart over today’s tragedy at the Basmany Market in Moscow.
 
In the telephone conversation Presidents also considered ways to develop Ukrainian-Russian relations and discussed a decision of the Crimean parliament to conduct a referendum in order to recognize the Russian language as a second state tongue. Yushchenko remarked that Ukrainian government tried to meet humanitarian needs of all national communities and said there were no language problems in the country. He added that Ukrainian was the only state language according to the Constitution.
 
The leaders also discussed mechanisms to repeal the animal products ban. They agreed that the both sides wanted to resolve the crisis and said they hoped it would soon be settled.

Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus also telephoned Victor Yushchenko to wish him Happy Birthday. Besides, they discussed Ukrainian-Lithuanian relations and regional cooperation.
