Contacted by BASA, officials of the Ukrainian consulate and Embassy in Chisinau could not name the date when the consulate will open in Balti. According to knowledgeable sources in the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, Svetoslav Drach, former adviser for the Transnistrian problem of the Ukrainian Embassy in Chisinau, is the candidate to the post of consul.
Ukrainian officials have assured that the new consulate will start working before the March-scheduled elections in Ukraine, so that Ukrainians residing the northern regions of Moldova be able to vote without travelling to Chisinau.
Moldova is due to open a consulate in Odessa, Ukraine, by the end of this year.
