With avian influenza continuing its spread in Europe and with outbreaks of disease registered in Ukraine, the United Nations System stands ready, together with other international and bilateral partners, to support ’s effort in fighting the infection and ensuring comprehensive response and preparedness for a possible pandemic.

In order to assist the national response and to share best available global expertise, the office of United Nations Resident Coordinator in is organising the visit of Mr. David Nabarro, Senior United Nations System Coordinator for Avian and Human Influenza. The visit will take place on 14-15 February 2006, press office of UN in Ukraine reported.

It is planned that Mr. Nabarro will meet with the President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko, Deputy Prime Minister Yuriy Melnyk, Minister of Agrarian Policy Oleksandr Baranivsky, Minister of Health Yuriy Polyachenko and other Ukrainian senior officials as well as representatives of Donor and international development community.

Mr. Nabarro is a distinguished global public health expert. Mandated by the Secretary-General, he is responsible for ensuring that the United Nations System makes an effective and coordinated contribution to the national and global efforts to control the epidemic of avian influenza.

Following the International Pledging Conference on AI in Beijing (January 2006), Mr. Nabarro’s mission is also to ensure that the United Nations support development of comprehensive national action plans based on best international standards and harmonised with the global AI response system.
