On February 1, 2006 during the official visit to Brussels Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Borys Tarasyuk met with the EU Council Secretary General High Representative for the EU Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana, MFA press office reported.

In the course of the conversation Mr. Solana emphasized that the EU attaches great importance to intensification of cooperation with Ukraine. He expressed hope that the visit of Troika of Ministers for Foreign Affairs to Kyiv on March 3, 2006 would give a new impetus to bilateral cooperation.

For his part, Borys Tarasyuk informed Javier Solana of the efforts of the President and government of Ukraine aimed to ensure free, fair and democratic parliamentary elections in Ukraine in March. The interlocutors agreed with the fact that the conduction of elections to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine in accordance with the European standards would have significant positive influence on determination of prospects of further relations between Ukraine and the EU.

During the conversation the sides also discussed internal political situation evolution in Ukraine, the results of cooperation between Ukraine and the EU in 2005 and expectations for 2006 including the Ukraine – EU Action Plan implementation.

Mr. Solana positively assessed political dialogue development between Ukraine and the EU as well as cooperation in the sphere of common foreign and defense policy in particular rapprochement of positions of the parties in the most urgent issues of international life and active involvement of Ukraine into the EU crisis management operations.

The sides noted high level cooperation between Ukraine and the EU as to the Transdnestrian settlement and discussed further steps at this direction.

In the course of the conversation the interlocutors exchanged views on further regional situation development. Tarasyuk informed Mr. Solana on his recent visit to Serbia and Montenegro and emphasized the necessity of intensification of international efforts for the purpose of settlement of all complicated issues in particular the Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohija status determination in a constructive and mutually acceptable atmosphere complying with rights and interests of all involved sides.

Borys Tarasyuk invited Javier Solana to visit Ukraine in the near future. The invitation was accepted with thanks.
