Public health experts from the United States, Ukraine and some neighboring countries are meeting this week in Kiev to conduct a training workshop on the surveillance and control of potential pandemic influenza with a focus on the current global outbreak of avian influenza, press office of U.S. Embassy in Ukraine reported.

The goals of the five-day training seminar include promoting epidemiological, laboratory and response capacities for pandemic influenza in public and animal health sectors; providing information on prevention and control measures; and encouraging rapid sharing of technical information and strains related to pandemic influenza internally as well as with regional and global counterparts.

“Ongoing outbreaks of avian influenza among poultry in several districts of Crimea, Three new human deaths from avian influenza in Eastern Turkey and reports of human infection in Ankara underscore the importance of international cooperation to fight this disease,” stated U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine John E. Herbst in his remarks January 16 to open the seminar.

“Protecting all of our citizens requires fighting avian influenza at its source, regardless of national boundaries. Thus, our government will help foreign partners train personnel, expand surveillance, develop preparedness plans, and detect and contain influenza outbreaks,” the Ambassador added.
