January 2, Victor Yushchenko telephoned Turkmen President Saparmyrat Niyazov to discuss the situation caused by Russia’s reduction in gas supplies to Ukraine. Niyazov assured his colleague that Turkmen gas would be delivered to Ukraine in time and in accordance with all previous agreements. The Head of State said Naftogaz Chairman Oleksiy Ivchenko had gone to Turkmenistan to discuss additional details.

Yushchenko also spoke with Moldova’s  President Vladimir Voronin. Since Moldova has not signed a 2006 agreement on gas supplies with Russia, the sides agreed that Ukraine would temporarily help the republic by supplying it with our own gas. They also discussed ways to sparingly consume it, the President's press office reported.
