“Ukraine is ready for any kind of scenario in gas issue but hopes that the final decision of Russia will be reasonable and well-thought taking into account many years of Ukrainian-Russian partnership,” a member of “Our Ukraine” Bloc, the NSDC Secretary Anatoly Kinakh said at yesterday’s press conference. He also noted that Ukrainian power considered it necessary to liquidate barter schemes in gas transport relations between two countries but would not take a decision under political pressure.

Ukrainian top officials had been discussing a plan of settlement of energy issues at the last working meeting headed by President Victor Yushchenko, including a possibility of extension of gas co-operation with Turkmenistan and Iraq.

Commenting on a threat to increase gas rates, the NSDC Secretary said that a five-fold increase of prices for Russian gas threatens national economy, in particular chemical and metallurgical industries, which make 30% of production.

“Ukrainian side has already prepared a package of proposals for Russian officials that foresee stage-by-stage switch to new forms of payment. If Russia accepts it, it will give us an opportunity to adapt Ukraine’s economy to high prices, create a system of compensators for Ukrainian enterprises and use energy saving technologies” said Kinakh.
