The members of Sevastopol City Council refused to back the initiative of Party of Regions which stands for Russian language to be the second official in Crimea. Only fourteen people’s representatives voted for the proposal.

The majority of the Council’s members motivated the refusal with the huge sum of money which would be spent on the referendum - $200,000.

As a reminder, the modern ethnic composition of Sevastopol looks as follows: Russians – 74.4%, Ukrainians – 20.6%, the rest 5% consists of more than 26 nationalities – Byelorussians, Crimean Tatars, Jews, Armenians, Greeks, Germans, Bulgarians, Moldavians, Poles, Estonians, Latvians, Koreans and others. The absolutely majority of Sevastopol residents are Russian speaking.
