During today's press conference in Kyiv, Victor Yushchenko said Ukraine needed to change its energy policy.

“Ukrainian government should clearly understand that our country’s energy independence is both economically and politically challenging,” he said. "Ukraine should eventually solve this problem which has been neglected for years."

Then the Head of State commented on some measures they had formulated at a recent meeting of the Security and Defense Council of Ukraine. "We should more actively produce energy (oil, gas, uranium ore, etc.) and cooperate with leading companies to start projects to rehabilitate old fields. Experts claim that these projects will help us produce 1.5 times more oil in five years," stated the President.

Yushchenko said he was going to sign an order to establish an agency on energy saving. He also supported initiatives to receive grants to launch energy saving projects.

Speaking about Ukraine’s energy security, the President said it greatly depended on our transit capabilities and added that it was important to construct and renovate oil pipelines.

“In this new context we will discuss the future of our gas transportation consortium,” he said.

Yushchenko informed that he would soon hold a meeting to formulate tariff, port, customs and transit policy in the oil sector. He believes current rules “do not stimulate Ukraine’s breakthrough as a country with transit territories.”

The Head of Statealso said tomorrow he would present a five-year program to develop roads in Ukraine.
