On December 10, International Day of Human Rights, Victor Yushchenko claimed that Ukrainian government would spare no effort to protect human rights and liberties in Ukraine, the President's press service told.

“Rights and liberties of citizens are undisputed parts of a legal democratic society,” he noted.

The Head of State stressed that in the past year we have had several significant achievements. He believes the greatest accomplishment is freedom of speech. Yushchenko said local and international experts, journalists and NGOs also noted profound changes Ukraine had undergone this year in the field of human rights.

The President emphasized that Ukraine had taken a giant leap forward in the observation of human rights.

“Today, the new government regards opposition as an important part and an active participant of political processes in the state,” he said, pledging to observe fundamental rights at 2006 parliamentary elections.

Yushchenko added that he found cooperation with NGOs and journalists very important, and noted their contribution in the building of a new Ukrainian democratic society.
