Russian energy giant Gazprom will raise the natural gas price for Ukraine if the latter rejects the company's current proposal of $160 per 1,000 cu m, a senior company official said Wednesday, RIA Novosty reported.

Alexander Medvedev, deputy chairman of Gazprom's management committee, told a news conference: "If the current [proposed] price is rejected by Ukraine, Gazprom will put forward other proposals at higher prices."

Responding to a question about a possible compromise, Medvedev said, "The $160 price is a compromise in itself."
