Victor Yushchenko met with Lars Kallings, Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for HIV/AIDS in Eastern Europe, President's press office reported.

The Head of State stressed that Ukraine was committed to fighting the epidemic of HIV/AIDS and added that we were ready to activate our cooperation with the international community on this issue. Ukraine spares no effort to prevent the spread of this disease both internationally and locally, he said. Yushchenko also told his vis-à-vis he was going to dedicate one of his radio addresses to this alarming subject.

In his turn, Professor Kallings said, today, they would publish their first report on HIV/AIDS in Ukraine. He noted that UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan believed Ukraine was successfully preventing the spread of AIDS. Kallings stressed that Ukraine had been one of the countries to initiate a special session of the UNO General Assembly on HIV/AIDS in 2001 andto sign the Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS. He said results of its implementation would be considered at a special session of the General Assembly in May 2006, and invited the President to take part in it.

Yuriy Polyachenko, Ukraine’s Health Minister, and Ganna Shakarishvili, UNAIDS Project Coordinator in Ukraine, took part in the meeting.
