President Victor Yushchenko thanked parliamentarians for supporting a resolution enabling the Ukrainian media to function freely during next year’s election campaign, President's press office reported.

The Head of State pledged to spare no effort to ensure fair parliamentary elections in 2006. He said the media would play a leading role in conducting the elections democratically, covering all events of this campaign objectively and impartially .

Yushchenko said that, as Head of State, he had discussed this issue with journalists, Cabinet members, politicians and experts. The President reiterated that all executives agreed it was necessary to create favorable conditions for reporters to perform their duties without difficulty.

He noted that he appreciates journalists’ active social position, which they repeatedly demonstrate to the world.

The Head of State is convinced that the society also hopes for the media never again to become a tool for black PR and shameful technologies. He believes “the Ukrainian press learned its lesson in 2002 and 2004.”

Note. Today parliamentarians passed the Act “On changes to a number of legislative acts concerning realization of citizens’ election rights, ensuring of liberty of political debates, unbiased attitude of Mass Media to candidates, parties, blocs – subjects of election process.”
