In Paris, Victor Yushchenko took part in a Ukrainian-French energy forum. Its participants (Gaz de France, Areva, Framatome, Alstom, Renault, Societe General, Vinci, and Medef International) discussed cooperation between the countries in the energy sector, President's press office reported.
The President urged these French companies to invest in our economy, and noted that his government was going to sell fifteen “attractive” enterprises at auctions next year. He also spoke about our plans to construct an international sea port near Lake Donuzlav, encouraging the French partners to take part in this project. The French side informed the Head of State that they were ready to invest about ? 500 million in our country’s ports.
Then Yushchenko dwelled on our ambition to build a new gas pipeline in the framework of an international gas consortium. The President said that by starting this projectUkrainewould be able to transport 22 billion cubic meters of gas to Europe. The participants of the forum discussed ways to transport oil from Kazakhstan to Europe through the Odessa-Brody oil pipeline.
They also considered security issues in the atomic energy sector. The Head of State stressed that Ukraine wanted to construct a shield over the fourth unit of the Chornobyl Power Plant. He complimented France for its great security achievements, and assured those present that Ukraine needed their experience. We are particularly interested in France's expertise to process uranium ores and to produce fuel for atomic power plants, he added.
Speaking about oil and gas exploration, Victor Yushchenko said his government would completely revise the existing procedure to give license at transparent auctions. He said the Black Sea shelf was allegedly rich in oil, and urged all to invest their funds in the exploration of our territories.
When discussing ways to save energy, the sides agreed to establish a special commission on this issue. The President said Ukraine was interested in expert projects in this field.
