Ukraine expects the United States to resume financial support of the program of reprocessing solid rocket fuel in the territory of Ukraine, Ukrainian National Security and Defence Council Secretary Anatoly Kinakh announced during the meeting with Business Executives for National Security (BENS) representatives.

According to Kinakh, about 5,000 tons of solid rocket fuel is stored in Pavlograd, Dnepropetrovsk region.

The US Defence Department terminated financing the program in 2003.

Anatoly Kinakh reminded BENS delegation about the US obligations before Ukraine regarding reprocessing of this highly toxic rocket fuel and expressed assurance that members of the delegation would inform US President Administration about this issue.

According to Ukraine's international obligations of 1992 Lisbon Protocol on Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, RS-22 rockets, their components, and fuel were to be destroyed by December 5, 1999.

In 1993, Ukraine and the United States signed a framework agreement concerning the assistance to Ukraine on elimination of strategic nuclear weapons.

This agreement provides for creation of facilities for reprocessing solid fuel for the RS-22 rockets at the Pavlograd chemical plant.
